Why is Personal Space Important in a Relationship?
Being in a relationship is moving towards one goal together. But it does not mean that you should have the same approach. Although you are soul mates you are also individuals who need to grow independently. Many times when a partner asks for some space in a relationship it is taken as betrayal or stepping back from the responsibilities. But in reality that is not the case.
As an individual, you do need your personal space despite being in a very happy and healthy relationship.
Why do you need personal space in a relationship?
As an individual, you have your individuality and uniqueness which you add to any relationship. This uniqueness makes the relationship magical and helps it to grow and sustain. As time flies, you become dependent on each other. And this is the time when you can lose yourself in the relationship. Things can become dangerous if you start getting obsessed or too possessive of your partner.
That is when your growth stops and your whole world revolves only around your partner. To avoid all such situations and also to let the other person live according to his individuality personal space in a relationship is very much needed.
Benefits of having personal space in a relationship
1. Let you think about your interests
Alone time gives you scope to think about your interests. Things like what makes you happy or is troubling you become clearer when you enjoy a bit of me-time. It also helps you feel a lot more relaxed. Knowing yourself better improves your response and reaction to a particular situation at home. It in turn contributes towards improving your relationship.
2. Helps in maintaining individuality
When you can do something that you love or relish it gives a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. Maintaining individuality in a relationship also boosts confidence levels.
3. Prevents suffocation and clinginess
When either of the partners becomes too clingy the other partner starts feeling suffocated. And it is this over-possessiveness or clinginess that starts creating rifts and disputes in a relationship. Instead, if each partner gives personal space to the other both of them can live in harmony.
4. Keeps the spark alive
When you keep your individuality in a relationship intact it keeps the spark alive. It also ensures that you can carry on good communication and discuss important things about your responsibilities and duties as a partner openly. When either of the partners feels suppressed or unable to get enough freedom of action or expression, the light in the relationship starts getting dim.
5. Makes you more responsible
When you complete certain tasks on your own without taking the help of your partner, it makes you understand the efforts and significance of the contribution of your partner. It thus makes you more responsible as well as receptive towards the needs of the other thereby making your relationship scale into a better phase of understanding.
6. Exploring life as individuals
Love and affection should not set boundaries in a relationship. As an individual, you have different interests, hobbies, and desires. That is why personal space is as important as it gives you scope and time to explore life as individuals where you can experiment and try out things that you always wanted to do.
Just because your partner is not interested in painting or singing it does not mean that you should stop and refrain from exploring your potential in these different fields.
