pros and cons of MDF

MDF stands for Medium-Density Fiberboard, and is mainly known for two benefits: affordability and durability. With those two benefits, many have regarded MDF as the most versatile building and furniture material available, and is especially a good choice for storage cabinets, shelves, and cupboards. Due to the smooth surface, MDF is also a popular choice for decorative projects, because routing an MDF board won’t leave any tear-out and splintering, allowing us to easily paint over it.

With those facts, MDF has become one of the most popular composite materials in the past decade or so. MDF is primarily made of resin and wood particles which are pressure steamed and cooked to create a fine, uniformed material that is free of wood grain patterns.

To summarize, here are some pros and cons of MDF as a material.

Pros:

  • Very affordable compared to solid wood and most other composite materials, while offering decent density and durability
  • Extra smooth, and free of wood grain pattern. If you are looking for smooth finish, MDF is better than wood materials
  • Due to its smoothness, we can easily apply veneer, laminates, and paints over MDF
  • Commonly presented in uniformed, cut to size packages. Easy to implement for any projects
  • Due to its fine, consistent material, MDF is very easy to cut with a simple router, which will result in clean, sharp edges without fuzzing.

Cons:

  • Not as stiff as solid wood material, which is required by some furniture pieces such as long shelves
  • MDF is relatively heavy, which can be an issue with some furniture pieces, but can be an advantage for other needs
  • Very dense, and so will require high-quality tools to process and cut it
  • The smooth surface without wood grain pattern can be an aesthetic issue, a matter of preference
  • When cutting MDF, due to the airborne resin and wood particles, a dust mask is necessary for safety purposes

So, What is Cut To Size MDF

As we have mentioned above, one of the key advantages of MDF is that we can easily cut i, provided we have the right tools. Due to the high density, higher than most wood materials, we will require heavy-duty tools that are usually used to cut ceramic, carbide, or even diamond.

However, if we use the right tools, the result is a very fine, consistent, and uniformed boards without any chip-out.

As a result of this advantage. professional furniture makers like London Furniture (LFS) Spraying can provide MDF boards with uniformed size according to the client’s requirement.hence, “cut to size”.

Since accuracy and uniformity is both an advantage and a necessity for MDF, in Leessa we use cutting-edge technology and tools to produce cut to size MDF according to your needs from thickness to dimensions to special requirements like hinge holes, grooves, finger pools, and others needs.
