How to Keep your Mind and Body Healthy Post Surviving Infidelity

Discovering that your partner or spouse has had an affair is painful, stressful, and overwhelming. People who get cheated on must overcome more than sexual betrayal. They must deal with the loss of trust in their significant other and relationship as a whole. Often the cheated-on partner or spouse is unable to understand what has happened completely and is left in a state of total confusion. Sometimes the shock from the discovery is so great that people have a hard time taking fundamental decisions about their day-to-day life. If you just learned that your significant other has been unfaithful, keep reading to cope with the situation and regain the ground beneath your feet. 

Things to Do to Cope with Infidelity

#1: Get tested for STDs

Infidel men and women are notorious for their carelessness about safe sex. This carelessness is why it is of cardinal importance to get checked by your doctor as soon as you find out about the affair. Explain the situation to your doctor and request a full STD screen. It is imperative that you learn whether your partner has compromised your health or not. 

#2: Reach out for Help

Many studies show that people who have been cheated on feel ashamed about the actions of their partners and are too embarrassed to request help from their parents, siblings, friends, and other loved ones. The truth, however, is that you are not responsible for the actions of others, and you shouldn’t feel uncomfortable asking for assistance to recover from your current hardships. You can also consider joining a support group and share your feelings with people who have been in your shoes. 

#3: Don’t Use Sex as a Repair Tool

Surviving infidelity shouldn’t be about Sex. You shouldn’t use intimacy as a tool to “fix” things with your partner. Sex is something very personal that requires trust, and since the bond has been broken, it would be naive to expect that it will help. In fact, intimacy will surely feel good for a moment, but in reality, it is only a way to deny what has happened and that you have issues with your significant other. 

#4: Allow Yourself to Go Through the Stages of Grief 

Discovering that your partner has been unfaithful will take you through the five stages of grief. At first, you will deny the possibility that your significant other has cheated on you, then you will feel angry, and you will want to make impulsive decisions. Next will come the bargaining where you will haggle with your partner with the hope that it was a one-time thing. Then will come the depression, and that is when you must seek help and put yourself and your well-being first. It is only then that you will be able to reach the stage of acceptance and have the ability to make a proper decision about your future with your spouse or partner. 

#5: Seek Therapy If You Decide to Forgive

Seek counseling in case you decide to forgive the affair and give your relationship or marriage another try. Your ability to accept what has happened will not fix the issues with your partner. Go to couples’ therapy and try to find the reason behind the whole situation. 

Dealing with infidelity is never easy, but with the right help and self-care, things will get better one day at a time. Focus on your needs and do what you feel is right for you, your state of mind, and physical health.
