Truck Driving 101: Getting a CDL License in Georgia

• Class C – Can operate a vehicle under 26,001 lbs, primarily used for hazmat vehicles and 16 passenger vehicles or more.

The type of CDL will depend on what type of trucks and trailers you want to drive and pull, or what the company you’re applying to is looking for.

Regardless of which type of CDL you get, you will need to have had a standard class D license for no less than two years. If you can’t drive a car, you can’t drive a long-haul truck. 

Georgia’s CDL Requirements

There’s more to obtaining a CDL though than merely passing a few tests. You can’t just walk into a DMV and ask to take the CDL test. Remember you’ll need to have had a class D license for at least two years before applying for a CDL. So, bring your state issued driver’s license with you. This will also provide proof of residency which you will need as well.

In order to drive across state lines, you will need to be 21 or over. But if you are between the ages of 18 and 20 you can get a restricted license which allows you to only drive a commercial vehicle within the state of Georgia.
