Top Online Marketplaces Selling NFTs
This post was last updated on March 25th, 2024
Before 2021, virtually no one knew what the NFTs were.
Fast forward to today, and they have become one of the hottest new commodities on the Internet — even if most of us still have no idea how non-fungible tokens actually work.
The world’s first NFT marketplace, CryptoPunks, launched in fall 2017, selling primarily digital artwork. Few people knew about NFTs then except for the early adopters of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
While 2020 saw significant growth in the NFT market, 2021 will likely be seen as the year that NFTs entered mainstream consciousness.
Just in the first quarter of 2021, more than $2 billion was spent on NFTs, according to a report by nonfungible.com. That’s an increase of more than 2,100 percent from the previous quarter. According to DappRadar, the surging popularity of NFTs resulted in about $1.2 billion in sales just in July 2021.
Clearly, something big is brewing with the emergence of these “digital collectibles.” As Crunchbase News wrote in August 2021: “NFTs Are Here To Stay, Dominate And Slay.”
If you’re curious what kind of art, music and other digital art is being sold as NFTs, the easiest way to start is to browse the online marketplaces for NFTs that have been created within the last few years to meet the skyrocketing demand. Many more such marketplaces are being created all the time.
Here’s a few NFT marketplaces you should check out:
OpenSea
This is the current big daddy of the NFT marketplaces. Daily trading volume on the OpenSea NFT marketplace surpassed $49 million on Aug. 1, according to Crunchbase.
OpenSea was the first NFT marketplace founded on the Ethereum blockchain, and remains the largest online store of digital artwork. The store is estimated to have 4 million assets. Major collectors of NFTs like OpenSea for its dual support of both ERC-721 and ERC-1155 standards.
On OpenSea, you can find visual art, photos, videos, music, domain names, sports memorabilia, assets for video games, and more.
SuperRare
This one has also been in the news a lot lately. When Time published a recent story about teenage artists making millions of dollars selling their work as NFTs, the lead anecdote involved sales on SuperRare.
According to the article, an 18-year-old artist made so much money selling his paintings on SuperRare that he was able to pay off his parents’ house and their vehicles.
Unlike the huge repository of OpenSea, SuperRare offers rare and limited-edition digital artwork and has many functions similar to social media. The site’s managers choose the artwork allowed on the site, creating a curated atmosphere that appeals to art aficionados.
Honorable Mentions
It seems like nearly every segment of the global marketplace is suddenly getting its own online store for NFTs. If you’re looking for something more niche, here are a few more selective (and brand new) marketplaces to check out.
Myth Market – This is the one for memorabilia lovers looking for something unique. Myth Market offers NFTs from all the well-known brands of digital trading cards, including Garbage Pail Kids digital cards, GoPepe, Blockchain Heroes collectible cards, and much more.
Mogul Productions – Mogul Productions launched in February 2021 is combining cryptocurrency and a love of filmmaking for the first platform for DeFiFi, or decentralized film financing. It also recently launched its own NFT marketplace where users can find unique film-related NFTs.
Iconic Moments – A new collaboration from investors and venture capitalists, Iconic Moments was created specifically for museums and cultural institutions to have a new method for digital preserving their collections. VentureSouth, Cultivation Capital, Techstars, Red Stick Angels, and Acadian Capital Ventures joined in on a nearly $2 million seed round to launch the company. If you’re a museum dork, this is the marketplace for you.
There’s so much more out there! This emerging industry is growing fast, so start doing your research and join the future of digital art.
