Top 5 Tips to Maintain Your Mattress
You wash your sheets, vacuum your floors, and dust your room. But how often do you clean your mattress?
Even though mattresses are a huge investment, and we spend one-third of our lives sleeping on them, many people don’t do anything to maintain their mattresses.
If you don’t maintain your mattress, it can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria and allergens. This can affect your quality of sleep, which in turn can affect your overall quality of health.
So, what can you do to maintain your mattress?
Read on to learn about the top five mattress maintenance tips:
1. Flip It and Reverse It
Every four months or so, reverse the mattress so the foot of it becomes the head. And then, flip it over to the other side.
By doing this, you will have even wears and tears on every side of the mattress, instead of all the wears and tears congregating to one side. Flipping and reversing your mattress will also help prevent sagging, which occurs when you sleep in the same spot again and again.
However, keep in mind that if you have a pillow top mattress, you won’t be able to flip it. But, you should still rotate it every few months or so.
2. Invest in a Mattress Cover
Whether you have a hybrid mattress or a memory foam mattress, you’ll want to protect it with a mattress cover. Although mattress covers rarely come included in the price of the mattress, they are definitely worth the extra investment.
For one thing, mattress covers help to keep your mattress dry. Keeping your mattress dry is very important in order to prevent the growth of mildew and mold.
Another great thing about mattress covers is that they help prevent stains to your mattress. Just make sure you wash your mattress cover every few weeks to keep it fresh.
3. Vacuum
It’s also very important to vacuum your mattress on a regular basis, even if you have a mattress cover. This will help keep your mattress clean and fresh and it will keep dust mites at bay.
It is estimated that half of the weight of a ten-year-old mattress comes from dust mites and dust mite droppings if you do not vacuum your mattress.
Before you vacuum your mattress, you’ll first want to make sure that the vacuum brush is clean. This will prevent dirt particles from transferring from the brush to the bed. Also, make sure to vacuum all sides of your mattress.
4. Give It Some Air
As we said earlier, it’s very important to keep your mattress from getting damp, as this can cause mold and mildew.
In order to keep your mattress dry, it is a good idea to open your doors and windows for a short period of time each day – at least 30 minutes. This will allow the moisture from your body to evaporate from the mattress.
And, the fresh air will also help keep your mattress fresh.
5. Remove Stains ASAP
If you find a stain on your sheets, it’s best to remove it as soon as possible so it does not soak through to your mattress.
When you find a stained spot, first blot the area to remove as much of the stain as possible. Then, fill a spray bottle with hydrogen peroxide and spray the area, letting it sit for around five minutes. Wipe it down, and then sprinkle baking soda on the area.
After several hours, brush off the baking soda, and you’ll find a stain-free mattress!
As you can see, there are a lot of things you can do to maintain your mattress!
