Things You Need To Know About US Marine Corps
History of the US Marine Corps
The history of US Marine dates back to November 10, 1775. On this day, the US Marine Corps was constituted, following the resolution passed by the Continental Congress. As per the resolution, two Marine battalions were to be constituted for deployment at sea and shores. The purpose behind raising the Marine Corps was to create a powerful military unit for handling ship-to-ship attacks, enforce discipline, facilitate shipboard security, and deliver services as landing force with the fleet. Later in the year 1783, the Continental marine was dissolved and resuscitated as Marine Corps in 1798. Ever since, the Marine Corps has been delivering selfless independent services for sea, air and land warfare and protection. They have immensely contributed to almost all American wars, thereby abiding by their motto “First to fight”.
The Marine Corps Emblem
The first official emblem for the Marine Corps was validated in the year 1868. This earlier version portrayed an eagle’s picture with the small red ribbon being held in its beak displaying Marine Corps motto, “Semper Fidelis” ( “always faithful”). This powerful symbol, together with an image of an eagle, anchor and globe depicted Marine Corps unwavering loyalty and commitment towards safeguarding the US through sea, land and air duties.
In the year 1954, an official design for the United States Marine Corps seal was approved. Instead of a crested eagle, the seal displayed a picture of American Bald eagle whilst the rest design elements of seal remaining the same. However, after a year, the symbol imprinted in seal became the authorized emblem of the Marine Corps, thereby replacing the earlier version of 1869. The American Bald Eagle is native to regions of North America. Therefore it is believed to add more patriotic spirit to the emblem. Since then, this emblem has been considered official and can also be sported in US Marine Corps Flag.
The US Marine Corps Flag
Background
The US Marine Corps flag has a rich and diverse history. Until 1939, there was no official flag. All flags displayed by Marine Corps till then were unauthorized. In the year 1775, for the first time, Commander in Chief of the Navy, Esek Hopkins, used a Gadsden flag on his flagship to represent America. However, information about what was being used from 1783 to 1900s has no precise pieces of evidence in support.
From 1914 to 1939, the Marine Corps used a blue-colored flag with Marine emblem located in the center surrounded by a laurel wreath. Featured above the emblem was a bright red colored ribbon which read “US Marine Corps”, while another ribbon under emblem read “Semper Fidelis”.
The Current Flag of U.S. Marine Corp ….
The official US Marine Corp flag was adopted in 1955. The official flag features a bright scarlet red background with Marine Corps gray and gold emblem imprinted in the center. The emblem encompasses a globe, an eagle, and an anchor. The globe here depicts the extensive presence of Mariners around worldwide; the anchor represents its maritime history and heritage, whereas the picture of an eagle has been used for representing a nation that Mariners commit to safeguarding. In addition, a white banner imprinted with “Semper Fidelis” can also be sported on the flag. Apart from this, the official flag also features a ribbon at the bottom, which reads “United States Marine Corps”.
The Marine Corp flag can be flown on several occasions, be it a parade, installation or during special ceremonies. However, for indoor and outdoor purposes, the flag boasts a different design. For a parade and indoor usage, a Marine flag edged with a gold fringe is used, while for outdoor purposes, there is no such provision.
