The Rules in Addressing Wedding Invitation Envelopes

Best Wedding Invitation Envelopes

Your choice of an envelope is significant when sending out wedding invites. You do not want to disrespect your guests by addressing it the wrong way. Here are some of the things you should know about addressing invitation envelopes:

  • Married Couples

When addressing a wedding invitation to a married couple, you don’t need to include the husband’s middle name. If you feel you need to include the middle name, you can write the full name and not his initials.

  • Couples with Children

If you are addressing wedding invitations to a family with kids, it is not necessary to have the children’s name on the envelope if you want the children to come along. However, if you must, include the names of their children on the inner side of the envelope on the line below their parent’s name. When you want all of them present, you need to start with the name of the eldest child, followed by the other siblings in order of their age.

When addressing the names of the children, bear in mind that boys under the age of 23 years old are titled “Master” and not Mr. Which is used for those older than that age. Girls, on the other hand, that are under 18 years are referred to as Miss. You can also use the word “and” to link the children’s names in the invitation.

  • Couples with Different Surnames

It doesn’t matter if a particular couple lives together. You will need to address the woman first. If the wife chooses to be addressed by her maiden name, you will need to tag the envelope as Ms.

If the couples are living together but are not married, the envelope should be addressed by writing their names separately but using the word “and” to link their names. Inside the envelope, the two of them will be addressed independently using their titles and last names.

  • Addressing a Judge

If you are addressing a Judge, you must recognize the position they hold by writing “The Honourable” first before the other couple. If both husband and wife have different professional titles, you will still need to list the wife first in the case of a female judge. For example, “The Honourable Jayline Judy and Lieutenant Collins Judy, U.S Army.”

  • Addressing a Doctor

When addressing this type of envelope, if the husband is the doctor, the envelope will be written as “Doctor and Mrs”. If the title belongs to the wife, she will be addressed first as “Doctor”. However, if the two of them are doctors, the envelope will be addressed as “The Doctors” accompanied by their family name.

  • Addressing a Plus-One

If spouses are coming or you are inviting someone who will be bringing a date along with them, you can use your discretion to decide how long they have been together.

If the spouses have been together for at least six months, it is okay to address them together. You can send an invitation inside the envelope that might address them like this, “Ms. Grace and Guest”.
