Safe Practices for Keeping Your Prescription Drugs at Home
If you are on prescription medications, you probably have a disorder or an illness that the drugs help in a significant manner. You do have to keep these drugs at your home, however, in order to have access to them so that you can take them on a regular basis and as prescribed.
It is important to keep your pets, other family members, and your children safe from these drugs, however, and to keep yourself safe from them. Make sure to follow the five tips below to learn more about the safe practices that you need when keeping your prescription drugs at home.
1. Keep Them Locked
If you have a condition and are suffering from liver damages, meaning you may take a drug from CNAT, you may want to keep your drugs in a locked container. Give someone else, whether it is a spouse or a parent, the key to where the drugs are locked so that they only have the access to them. You, even if you do not have a history, should also keep these drugs locked if you live with children or others with a past. This will ensure that everyone remains safe and that no one has access to the drugs who do not need them.
2. Keep the Packaging
It is so important to keep any prescription medication that you have been prescribed in the packaging that it came in. If you put your drugs in a pillbox, make sure that you know what each is and that you still keep the packaging. The pill bottle or box contains the instructions and any warnings that are associated with the medication that you are taking. You also do not want to confuse your medications and take them at the wrong time or take the wrong one at any time.
3. Keep Medications Away From Children and Pets
You need to make sure that you keep your prescription medications out of the reach of children and pets. Put them in a cabinet that is high up in your home, for instance, that children and pets cannot climb to and access. Some medications have the ability to cause fatal consequences, which would not be necessary if the medications were out of reach. Please be sure to keep all of your loved ones safe by not allowing these most vulnerable individuals access when they are curious to try something.
4. No Sharing Allowed
Make sure that you do not share your medications with others who are not prescribed them. To start, this is an illegal action that can give you serious legal consequences if others find out about the sharing behavior that you are engaging in. If a doctor has not prescribed someone else your prescription, they may not be well-suited for the medication and may face fatal consequences or horrible side effects. Allow the prescribing to the medical professionals as they know what is best, and if someone asks if you will share, encourage them to seek a doctor’s advice for their own prescription.
5. Dispose of Medications That Are Not in Use
If you are not currently taking your medications or if you have medications that are leftover from a changed prescription, make sure you dispose of them as soon as possible. This is to ensure that no one else gets access to the medications. Take them to a proper disposal location as well, which many pharmacies have on the exterior of their buildings. They will ensure that the medications are disposed of correctly so that they do not end up in others’ hands unnecessarily.
Prescription medications are extremely beneficial to those who are in need of them and who take them properly and as prescribed. Be sure to not allow others access to these medications, however, if they are not their own and especially if they are minors. This can lead to serious consequences, including legal consequences and even fatalities, so it is so important to keep everyone safe. This can prevent the over 22,000 emergency room visits that occurred in the last year due to children and others having access to a medication not prescribed to them.
