6 Reasons to Own a Pet
This post was last updated on October 12th, 2023
Biology and the theory of evolution tells us that human beings are social beings. We need social interaction and connections to other humans to survive efficiently. If social interaction is not present, it may lead a person to extreme loneliness and even insanity in extreme cases.
Even though human interaction cannot be replaced due to the language and speech factors among our species, it is possible to deal with loneliness and feeling loved through interaction with other species, specifically animals.
Owning a pet or even caring for animals through pet donations can bring happiness and a feeling of satisfaction in one’s life. It can help one to receive and give love beyond genetic boundaries and enhance the quality of our lives.
Even if one is unable to keep a pet due to constant demands of attention and care that cannot be looked after with a busy schedule, one can visit animal shelters and volunteer for small durations and contribute through pet donations for their care and wellbeing. There are many animal shelters around the world along with animal activists who care for the animals who have been abandoned or rescued. Most of these organisations are non profit organisations that are in need of financial and other forms of support and help from other people. It is always a good idea to help this cause in any way possible.
But there is even more that bringing a pet home can do for us.
1. HELPING TO COPE WITH STRESS
Busy life and numerous responsibilities can make a person burdened with stress and anxiety. Stress can also lead to various other problems like depression, hypertension, heart related disorders and even other physical diseases. There are various ways to cope with stress but there are some fun ways too.
Having a pet in the house, especially a dog or a cat can allow one to be more playful and cheerful at home. They alleviate the mood of their owners and let’s not forget, they are cute too.
2. IMPROVING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Our immune system is responsible for fighting germs and bacteria that may harm us or cause infections or diseases. Doctors suggest that our immune system is stronger if our body continues to fight the harmful germs rather than isolating ourselves from all dangers.
When it comes to keeping pets in the house, it’s obvious that there are more germs and chances of being infected than when there are no pets. This means, our immune system is in better shape and is more capable of fighting harmful microbes than without any pets in the house.

3. THEY HAVE SHARP INSTINCTS
It has been observed that dogs and cats also have highly developed senses and they can sense danger before it arrives. In various houses around the world, dogs are to be thanked for helping their owners be informed about a growing cancer in their bodies. Apart from sensing the presence of tumors, dogs can even sense the arrival of new born babies if a mother is expecting in the house.
4. HELPING THE OWNERS STAY FIT
Since pets demand constant attention and in some cases regular walks outside the house, they can also help their owners remain fit and healthy by constantly demanding walks. So the pet owners can never become too lazy. This is rather helpful as walking can be very beneficial for us to stay fit and maintain our physical and mental health.
5. A COMPANION FOR THE YOUNG ONES
If there are children in the house or even newborns, there is no better companion for them than a pet. Domestic animals like cats and dogs are extremely loving and caring towards children and the children also feel very loved around pets.
Having pets in the house can also make the young ones learn responsibility as they grow up as pets need a lot of care and attention from their owners.
If there are children with disabilities, it is even better to have pets in the house as they are never judgmental and very loving towards everyone. It can also help in the learning and growth of children with disabilities.
6. HELPING WITH LONELINESS AND MENTAL DISORDERS
Having a pet in the house has also been seen to lower the risk of developing mental disorders like depression. This is because pets bring a lot of positivity in the house and provide unconditional love, care and support to their owners. This can help people feel safe, protected, loved and supported at the same time, having a pet as a companion is so much better because they are always cute.
