Medical Scent Detection Dogs: Easing Anxiety at the Dentist with Dr. Louis Bourget and Finley

Dr. Bourget

Dental anxiety is a common affliction, affecting nearly 36% of the population, with some patients avoiding necessary care altogether due to fear. Dr. Louis Bourget, an oral surgeon serving Gander, Dartmouth, and Truro in Atlantic Canada, is implementing an innovative solution to this problem: Finley, a specially trained medical scent detection dog. This groundbreaking approach to patient care offers comfort, reduces anxiety, and improves outcomes for patients.

Finley is a golden retriever bred by Pam Smith of Mermaid Golden Retrievers in Pictou, Nova Scotia. He is no ordinary canine. Selected at just 42 days old for his exceptional temperament and intelligence, Finley comes from a champion bloodline that exemplifies the best traits of his breed. With rigorous training under the renowned Bill Grimmer and support from organizations like Medical Detection Dogs UK, Finley became Atlantic Canada’s and Canada’s first medical scent detection dog dedicated to oral surgery.

His training focuses on identifying cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. Elevated cortisol levels are a clear marker of anxiety, and Finley’s keen sense of smell allows him to detect even the subtlest changes in a patient’s stress levels. This unique ability enables him to signal Dr. Bourget when patients need additional support, paving the way for personalized care.

Finley’s presence in the clinic is a game-changer for anxious patients. Before procedures, Finley interacts with them, offering a calming influence that naturally lowers cortisol levels. For many, his friendly demeanor and calming presence provide a sense of security in an otherwise intimidating environment.

Dr. Bourget explains: “Finley is an integral part of our team. He’s not just a dog—he’s a partner in delivering exceptional patient care. He helps us identify and respond to patient needs in ways we couldn’t before.”

Research supports the efficacy of service dogs in medical settings, showing they can lower stress hormones, reduce blood pressure, and enhance overall well-being. These physiological benefits contribute to more relaxed patients, which in turn leads to better surgical outcomes and quicker recovery times. For patients who might have otherwise delayed or avoided care, Finley’s presence transforms the dental experience.

Medical scent detection dogs like Finley undergo specialized training to detect biochemical markers associated with stress. The adrenal glands release cortisol in response to fear or anxiety, and it has a distinct scent detectable by dogs. When Finley alerts Dr. Bourget, he can adjust treatment plans or introduce relaxation techniques.

This proactive approach ensures patients feel cared for and understood, creating a positive feedback loop that benefits both their physical and mental health. Additionally, the presence of a service dog like Finley encourages patients to communicate their concerns more openly, fostering a collaborative atmosphere between patient and provider, with many expressing newfound confidence in seeking dental treatment.

Finley has also helped with the surgical staff.  Often stress is felt by staff due to sad and difficult surgeries, Finely has been there to support the staff as well.

Dr. Bourget’s practices in Gander, Dartmouth, and Truro are at the forefront of integrating medical scent detection dogs into dental care. Patients often describe their experiences as transformative, with many expressing newfound confidence in seeking dental treatment. For children especially, Finley provides a playful distraction, helping them feel safe during appointments. And for adults, his presence is a reminder that their fears are acknowledged and supported.

Finley’s success shows the potential for service dogs in broader medical applications. From assisting individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder to detecting conditions like diabetes or cancer, Covid-19, C-difficile (super Bug), the role of scent detection dogs continues to expand. Programs like Dr. Bourget’s partnership with Medical Detection Dogs UK highlight how cutting-edge science and compassionate care can work hand in hand.

For dental patients in Atlantic Canada, Finley is a source of comfort, a stress detector, and an ambassador for a more empathetic approach to healthcare. His story inspires other practices to embrace similar innovations, ensuring that healthcare remains as inclusive and supportive as possible. Finley is not only reducing anxiety but also restoring trust in dental care—one patient at a time.
