Mattress Size Buying Guide: What Size Should You Get?
Mattresses come in different sizes and shapes, and sometimes it’s hard to pick out which mattress is perfect for your needs.
Before you get tempted to buy the most prominent mattress out there, check out our guide on what to look for when choosing what mattress to get.
From the different “kings” to what to look for when it comes to size, we’ve got everything ready for you to check out.
A Look at the Different Sizes of Mattresses
The most common types of mattresses are the following: (sizes given in inches)
- Twin 38 x 75
- Twin XL 38 x 80
- Full/Double 53 x 75
- Full/Double XL 54 x 80
- Queen 60 x 80
- King 72 x 80
- California King 72 x 84
There’s also other larger versions such as the Wyoming King (84’ x 84’), Alberta King (96’ x 96’), and the biggest of all them, the Alaskan King (120’ x 120’). However, these mattress sizes are harder to find.
Your Height
The first consideration that you should make when picking out what size mattress to buy is your height. If you’re a relatively tall person, you would want a longer bed that doesn’t let your feet dangle out when you try to sleep at night.
Although someone that’s six feet tall would fit in a full/double sized bed, it leaves only three inches of vertical maneuverability. Think of it this way; if you sleep too low on your pillow, your feet will start to dangle.
The best choice would be Full/Double XL mattresses that would comfortably fit someone that’s six feet tall without making them curl into a ball at night. For even taller people, there are options such as the California King and the other kings we mentioned earlier.

How Much Space Do You Need When You Sleep?
Everyone takes up space when they sleep, but how much space do you need? Some people like to sprawl across their bed, and others want to sleep in the fetal position. The width of your mattress is dependent on how much space you take up on the bed.
If you sleep alone and curl up, you could make do with a Twin XL, but if you like to stretch your arms, a double would be better.
How Many People Will Be Sleeping on the Bed?
One of the most significant considerations as to mattress sizes is how many people will be using the bed at the same time. Usually, its either one or two adults and anything from a full/double-sized mattress or larger would suffice.
However, other factors come into play.
If you or your partner prefer a more personal space, then you should seriously consider buying a queen-sized mattress, which is a common choice with couples who share a bed. The amount of tolerance for motion when a partner moves in bed is also a consideration, the bigger the bed, the less you feel it if someone tosses and turns at night. However, this is also dependent on the type of mattress that you’ll be using.
How Much Space Do You Have in Your Bedroom?
Bigger is not always better, and most interior designers will always advise that you have to purchase furniture that is proportionate to the size of your room. It makes no sense getting yourself a 10 square foot Alaskan King if your bedroom is only 12 square feet.
It messes up with the overall aesthetics of your room as well as the balance will be off.
Picking a mattress size is dependent on the unique needs that you want, but regardless if you sleep with someone or if you sleep alone, you should always pick one based on how much personal space you need to get comfortable.
People sometimes want the most prominent bed out there but don’t take into account how much of the bed they will use in reality. Some people on a budget will want to save, but then won’t be happy with their space choices.
If in doubt, pick which size will give you the most comfort sleep at night! Trust us, not only will you sleep better, but you’ll wake-up feeling like you can take charge of the world.
