Improve the Air Quality in Your Home
This post was last updated on January 19th, 2021
Millions of people each year die of the complications brought on by air pollution. What’s more, things don’t seem to get any better in most of the world.
One place where you should feel safe and protected from everything, including air pollution in your own home. That’s why it is important for you to know that the air you breathe is clean and not harmful to you.
We consulted air conditioning and air quality experts at action Hughes Air Conditioning & Heating Repair to give us some tips to ensure that the air quality in our homes is satisfactory.
House Plants Can Help
There are certain house plants which can actually help purify the air in your home. That means that you can have a more natural and cheaper solution than paying for expensive air filters and running our HVAC even at times when you don’t need heating or cooling. (If you are thinking of becoming an HVAC tech then click here.)
Dracaena or the dragon tree is a very popular house plant which can help you get rid of harmful organic compounds. The money tree (also known as Pachira Aquatica) is another plant which has been proven to help purify the air of organic compounds.
Areca palm (or golden cane palm), is another popular indoor plant due to its beauty. However, researchers have also discovered that it has some benefits for the air. Namely, this plant is a master at absorbing carbon dioxide.
Don’t Use Air Fresheners
If you read the previous entry and wondered where ‘organic compounds’ could be coming from, air fresheners and chemical cleaning supplies are actually one of the biggest sources of these harmful substances.
What’s worse, some of these compounds are volatile and may react with one another to create even more harmful substances, like formaldehyde.
Fortunately, you can minimize your exposure to those substances by simply using products which do not create these substances. Look for products whose label indicates that they are not harmful to the environment and your health.
Alternatively, you can make your own simple cleaners, mostly using baking soda, vinegar, and lemon. Unless you really need the disinfectant, you can clean your home with less harmful products.
Improve the Ventilation in Your Home
The first thing you really want to do is to make sure that your ventilation system is a part of the solution and not a part of the problem. That’s why you should have the whole HVAC system checked at least once a year, and it’s better if you do it twice.
The air conditioning and heating filters also need to be regularly changed or cleaned as per the instructions of the manufacturer. They can only be effective if they are properly maintained. If something doesn’t appear right with your AC, reach out to an AC technician, don’t wait until the problem escalates into something more serious and more expensive.
Minimize the Production of Allergens
One of the negative trends which arose from our cleaner lifestyles is that more and more people develop allergies, with pollen and house dust allergies ranking really high on the list of the most common ones.
If you want to get rid of the allergens in the air, all you need to do is follow some very simple rules. First and foremost, change your bedding often, since that is the prime location where dust mites live (and produce the house dust).
Furthermore, you should insist on vacuuming the carpets at least twice a month and have a good doormat which will remove as much of the dirt from people’s shoes as possible.
Doing a few small things for the quality of the air in your home can amount to a big difference. So, whether you take any advice from this article, or find your own way, make sure that you do something and help yourself.
