Tips for Fostering Teenagers

Parenting teenagers is quite challenging which is why it produces so many stories, funny moments, and frustration. This is a time when hormones and emotions are changing, and teens are trying to assert their independence, and cement their identities. It is also a time when many parents try to do their best for their kids to ensure proper growth and development. Fostering teens comes with its own set of additional challenges, but it is still possible to do a great job if you keep a few things in mind.

They Need to Feel at Home

Foster kids need to feel like they belong when they arrive at your home, which is why making it feel like a home for them is so important. An important aspect of doing so is getting them the provisions they need and balancing it out across the home. For example, they may feel left out if other kids have a full-size bed and they do not.

They may also feel unwanted if they are not given their own space, which is especially important for teens as they are more likely to want some independence compared to younger foster kids.

While you do not have to give them a grand tour of the home, you should show them where the basics like the bathroom and cupboards are.

Understand the Importance of Food

Food is important because it holds a lot of memories and feelings for most people. Your foster kids will likely already have foods they like, and it is a good idea to find out what they are and provide them. You should consider taking them shopping for these items as that gives you more time to bond.

Get to Know Them

Many foster children have had negative experiences, and it is your job as a parent to provide them with the stability, care and love they need to separate them from these experiences. The best way to do so is by talking to them and getting to know who they are.

Instead of drilling them with questions, have a conversation with them. Ask relevant questions and listen to them. Doing so will make them feel heard and understood making it easier for them to open up to you in the future.

Having such conversations can be difficult, especially for teens who do not yet trust you. You can make things easier by finding help from other foster parents. You can find resources for parents fostering in Manchester through fostering agencies. They will provide you with advice that will help you engage better with the teen(s) you are fostering.

Don’t Take Things Personally

A lot goes on in the minds and bodies of teenagers. They experience mood and bodily changes which can cause stress. This can be amplified by the experiences they have had in the past. You need to give them space to work some things out and go in when you feel or see they are struggling.

Fostering teens is very different from fostering young kids. There is a lot going on in their minds and bodies and understanding this will help you know how to help them navigate the new world they have just entered.
