Arthrodesis Toe

The first step to finding relief is being properly diagnosed by a skilled podiatrist, who knows what symptoms to look for. Most of the time, if you are suffering from pain in the front of your foot, you will need a procedure known as arthrodesis toe.

What is Arthrodesis Toe?

Arthrodesis toe is a surgical procedure that fuses the bones at the base of the big toe to the 1st metatarsal joint.

If you are unable to find relief from other methods such as medications or a splint, the next option is this procedure to correct the MTP joint at the base of the big toe. Just keep in mind that it isn’t a very simple procedure and will take weeks for a full recovery.

What Causes Pain in the Front of the Foot?

There are a few different reasons that you could be experiencing pain in the front part of the foot resulting in the need for arthrodesis toe. Arthritis, an injury or even a genetic defect can cause deformities leading to pain. The pain is usually worse when walking.

So, what does the procedure entail?

An experienced podiatrist will position your foot so that to top of it is visible. After sterilization of the area, an incision will be made above the big toe. Any cartilage will be removed and if needed, the joint and bone will be repositioned to align correctly. Screws are then inserted to fuse the two together and angle slightly upward, to assist in walking correctly.

Sometimes a bone graft is needed to complete the fusion. After the procedure, a metal plate will be needed to help stabilize and then the big toe is bandaged up. During recovery, you will need to wear a cast. Recovery could take anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks. Once completely healed you will be able to return to your normal life.

During the recovery process, you may experience some discomfort as you heal. As long as you listen to your podiatrist and rest your foot, you will be able to recover in a couple of months and not worry about the pain to recurring.

This procedure is a big decision, but if you know exactly what you are getting in to and you talk with a trusted foot surgeon, this might be the best option for you.
