Neglect and lack of moisturizing leads to cracked heels. The heels develop deep cuts, which in severe cases can become painful. When the feet experience too much pressure, they expand sideways. If the skin is dry, this expansion leads to cracks. Red or flaky patches on the heel are the first warning signals of this condition. Zinc and omega-3 fatty acid deficiency also cause these cracks.
Try out these home remedies to control this condition.

- Take one ripe banana and mash it. Apply this on the cracks. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then wash it off with normal water. Do this daily.
- Take the flesh of ½ a coconut and add one mashed banana. Mix it well and make a thick creamy paste. Apply this on the cracks, leave it for 30 minutes and then wash it off with normal water.
- Take a handful of margosa (neem) leaves, crush it to make a fine paste and add 3 teaspoons of turmeric powder. Mix it well and apply this on the cracks. Leave it on for 30 minutes before washing it off.
- Cut a lemon into half and rub this on the feet. Squeeze the lemon to apply the juice on the skin. Continue rubbing for 5 minutes. Lemon juice is mildly acidic and helps to remove dead skin cells. Lightly scrub the affected area with a loofah or soft brush and wash your feet with water.
- Avoid wearing sandals with open backs, as it facilitates the sideways expansion of the heel, leading to cracks.
- Also, standing bare feet in damp areas for a long time can make the skin dry. Avoid doing it.
