Ethics and Morality of Sex Dolls
This post was last updated on July 15th, 2023
Today’s topic is going to be a sensitive one that I will try to approach with the utmost care. It’s difficult to approach sex dolls with a touch of morality and ethics because this market is still very quiet. Many people aren’t open about either having or wanting a sex doll, and even fewer are willing to speak about the ethics and morality surrounding them.
I’ll broach these subjects in regards to both sex dolls and sex robots, or sex dolls with AI programming. We will approach subjects of forming an emotional bond with sex dolls, whether there are social implications to widespread adoption of sex dolls and if they can be used to treat sex offenders.
Please not that the best sex dolls in the industry are made of silicone or TPE. This makes it possible that sex dolls these days look and feel very humanlike.
Emotional Bonding
Can someone emotionally bond with a sex doll? Those who already own one know the answer to this. While they look human, perhaps the most human aspect of a sex doll is the personality owners graft onto them.
According to the owner of RealDoll, people don’t fall in love with a person’s body. They fall in love with what that person represents. That’s why people will stay together long after their beauty has faded. Now imagine a human-shaped object that can take all your affection, satisfy all you sexual needs and never lie to you or hurt you.
That’s why many lonely or emotionally damaged people fall in love with their dolls, but it’s not a stretch to believe that anyone can humanize their dolls. We humanize our pets, objects around us and even natural forces. This is just using that nature and applying it to a doll that looks like a goddess, like all the physical traits that we prize and treasure.
Please keep this in mind throughout this article as it will explain why people feel so strongly about their sex dolls and how an emotional bond is formed in the first place.
Affect Human Relationships
Many people feel that sex robots, or sexbots, will be the doom of human relationships. It’s easy to see why. As I said before, sex dolls, in general, are easy to humanize and emotionally attach to. Specific sex dolls have AI that understands your preferences, what you like and can even predict what you may like in the future. It’s almost like having a real partner. For some, it might even be better.
This is difficult to answer with any certainty. Will someone stay with their human partner? Their partner who can age, lie and fail. Their partner who may not sexually excite them anymore or who might have personality traits the other partner is merely tolerating. These are real concerns.
While these concerns are realistic on paper and may occur in some situations, most couples who add a sex doll to their lives find that it only enhances both of their feelings. It’s a way for them both to explore different fantasies and ensures the sexual energy never goes outside the relationship.
Not only that, but the sexbot becomes a close friend to both partners. They can each humanize it in their own ways and begin to see the doll as a confidant and friend, which can be healthy as they each have a place to store thoughts and feelings they may not want to share with their partner.
There is a potent danger on paper, but in reality, it seems sex dolls just enhance the relationship.
Sexbots and Societal Harm
I am going to take this more in the perspective of a single person having a sexbot since I already covered how a sexbot affects a couple’s relationship. The disaster scenario is that lonely people will find a sexbot that they like and that fulfills all their wildest dreams. Once they have bought their way into the beauty they’re yearning, that person will never have to search for real people, and they will forever be with that robot. This, of course, follows the line of logic that soon human reproduction will cease and we will die as a species.
This might happen in some isolated instances, but in truth, sexbots act more as a bridge to true human relationships or as a therapeutic tool. Many people are lonely and they want to love someone, but for one reason or another, no one is there for them. This could range from having a broken heart from a divorce, being a widower, being physically or mentally disabled or just being scared of approaching another person.
A sexbot is a container for those feelings along with acting as a sexual outlet. While some people may never seek an outside relationship and may stay with their sexbot, many will learn to be more open with those feelings of love and compassion and will start showing them to others.
Dolls of Loved Ones
This is a huge topic in regards to the ethics of sex dolls. If you are a widower, is it ethical or moral to make a sex doll that looks like your deceased partner? It can be done and the process is easier than you think.
Plenty of manufacturers and sex doll shops these days offer their customers the ability to order custom sex dolls. This gives them the option to have a sex doll that looks like their favorite porn star or even a deceased partner.
Some will see this as disgusting. It looks like the widower is living in a fantasy and cannot accept that his partner has passed away. To others, this might be a therapeutic tool, or it might be the only thing anchoring that person to reality.
It’s hard to really pinpoint whether this is right or wrong. I’d like to believe it’s more therapeutic, but it’s easy to see both sides of this one.
Child Sexbots
Here is one of the most divisive topics regarding sexbots. Sex dolls can be made at any size, so a child-sized one can be manufactured. Not only that, but it’s easy enough to add an AI into this doll that will make it act like a real child.
Going by that logic, should this be endorsed as a treatment or at least an outlet for pedophiles? One side of this argument is that it will give them an outlet for their urges and they won’t harm real children. We still view sexbots as fake, but when does that AI become too realistic?
The other side is that giving them an inch is like giving them a mile. Will this one victory generate more attacks or give them ammunition for other legal victories? Can succumbing to their needs truly be good for society?
I would support the restriction of these dolls. While sex dolls can be therapeutic in many scenarios, this is not one of them.
Conclusion
Many people have difficulty confronting the topic of ethics and morality with sex dolls and sexbots, and it’s easy to see why. We are dealing with so many issues and it can be hard to know what’s right and wrong, especially since there is still so much stigma involved in owning a sex doll.
I support sex dolls in general and see them as healthy and therapeutic. There are some areas though that should have restrictions and regulations. The biggest are would be child sex dolls. I don’t see a viable health benefit there and believe it should be restricted. We should also regulate the age of people who can buy these dolls.
Outside of this, owning a sex doll or sexbot can be very helpful to the owners and doesn’t spell the end of humanity. That’s an overblown crisis. In truth, they are therapeutic and nothing but beneficial.
