The current lifestyle of people across the globe has become so much busy that they are proud of being a workaholic. We all know some or the other people in our social circle who work till late at night and the only thing they come to home is for eating and sleeping. Such people are known for being busy all the time and they generally find themselves short of time. They never avail their paid leaves and they don’t even go on vacations.
Is it a matter of pride being a workaholic? Is it great to avoid family and social life for the same amount of remuneration you get if you work for the stipulated 8 hours? Think for yourself! Over working reduces your productivity levels as your mind and body is structured to work for a determined amount of time and then it requires ample rest to repair itself.
It is great if you love your work and have the zest to grow in your profession but it is not fair to sacrifice your relationships for work. Your addiction to your work will hamper your interpersonal relationships while the work load and stress will take a toll on your health. To keep your creativity alive, you must manage your work and personal life in a way that you are highly efficient in your work while giving time to your friends and family too.
If you feel that you are becoming a workaholic, then you must have a sneak peak into the 7 essential tips to avoid becoming a workaholic:
1. Limit Your Working Hours
The best way to avoid becoming workaholic is by limiting your working hours and staying consistent with it. If you work from 9 am to 6 pm, then plan your day in a manner that you kick start your work enthusiastically at 9 am and allot tasks on the basis of priority for each hour. Strictly adhere to your plan of action for the day in way that all your work is accomplished till 6 pm. Make a practise of finishing your day’s task by 6 pm and pack your bags for leaving the office. If you become habitual of following such a routine daily, then you will automatically become proficient in planning your day at work.
2. Limit Usage Of Technological Devices
At workplace, you need to keep your mind attentive and you need to act creatively to ensure that you work productively. For this, you will have to limit your usage of technological devices such as smartphones, tablets and computers. You must use them for official purposes only and any personal usage is considered as a distraction from your work.
People have become accustomed to making personal calls, checking social networking site accounts and sending personal messages/ mails from the workplace. All this amounts to wastage of time, which could have been well utilised in completing pending work. Due to such improper utilisation of time, you need to wait late at office and thereby, you become a workaholic.
3. Ensure Adequate Sleep
Many studies have revealed that people who sleep adequately have a relaxed state of mind and are better at providing creative solutions to critical problems. Working up late at night or getting up too early for an upcoming presentation will have a negative impact on the work due to lack of proper concentration. When you don’t have adequate sleep of at least 7 hours, then you will be less attentive and your mind starts feeling stressed and irritated. Your efficiency will be at jeopardy if you are unable to give your best to your work.

One of the best ways to perk up your creative side is by spending time with yourself. You must unwind your hidden potential by doing what you like. You must start pursuing your hobbies again to bring more zing into your life and take a break from work and its stress. You must go out on small outings all by yourself to explore the places you always wanted to. Explore the beauty of the nature and enjoy the soothing climate, which you have always ignored for being a workaholic. Take a break from the official messages, phones and paper work to realise what you actually want from your life.
5. Spend Quality Time With Family & Friends
While you love to work hard and pave the path for a bright future, there are people who love you despite the fact that you don’t give them the required time. Your family and friends have always stood with you in all your successes and failures. They have imposed immense faith on you and have been inspiring you to step higher and higher.
But that doesn’t mean that you have the right to sideline them and take them for granted. You must give a stipulated time to your work and must spend quality time with your family and friends frequently to tell them how important they are for you. You must plan vacations with your family or go on outings with your friends to know more about their lives and at the same time to give your mind a respite from your busy work schedule.
6. Be Organized
If you are a workaholic, then what you need to do impulsively is to organize your life. You must aim for a simple and peaceful day that begins with getting up early, going for jogging or exercising, writing down your to-do list for the day, reading newspaper, getting ready for office, adhering to your to-do list at office, leaving from office on time, spending time with family in the evening, reading positive books and sleeping on time. You need to keep your work life and personal life sorted so that you can act in the most creative manner possible in both the areas.
