This post was last updated on July 5th, 2024
Have you ever witnessed that you hit the gym after procrastinating your decision for long and you are accompanied by some of your friends or colleagues and later when they quit, you strive hard to continue but at last call it quits? So ask yourself: Are you really serious about your health? Why do you find it difficult to exercise regularly? Everyone loves to boast a great physique and everyone wants to be slim, fit and healthy. People try to exercise regularly but they fail to be consistent. Most people are aware of the benefits of exercising but still lack of determination poses as the main hurdle.
It is also true that lack of determination and will power are the short term excuses. The main determinant is lack of getting habituated to exercise. You want to have a great personality but your main problem is that you are not considering exercise, a habit followed in routine just like taking a bath in the morning. You must be so much in habit of exercising that no excuse can tempt you to skip it, even for a day. It is not easy to bring exercising into habit when you have already delayed it for a long time.
It is said that once you become habitual of exercising, it will become your addiction. So sharing with you are 7 easy steps to develop the habit of exercising, which will ensure your consistency along with great results:
1. Determine Your Goals
Initially, it is your goal which motivates you to exercise. But motivation is what gets you started, while habit keeps you going. So incorporating the habit of exercising is very essential and you can start it by noting down your aims for which you want to put in the efforts. You may want to become slim, improve strength, amplify your speed or want bulky muscles. Before you take the membership at a gym or start exercising at home, keep a clear picture of your goal in mind so that it will keep you motivated. If you are striving to attain multiple goals, then adopt a step by step approach and focus on one goal at a time for better results.
2. Prepare A Comprehensive Plan
In the current busy lifestyle, you need to fit in different activities in your tough schedule. If you are determined to be habitual to exercise then you need to find a time slot for this activity. If you wish to hit the gym, then the gym instructor will design your exercise routine as per your goal.
But if you wish to exercise by yourself, then you need to design a customised training programme. You need to go online or consult with friends and colleagues about different exercises suitable for attaining your goal. Collect accurate information about various exercises and note down which of the exercises you will be performing, how many repetitions you want to do and how many times in a week you will exercise. You also need to note down the pace in which you will increase the time for exercising and what combinations of exercises you will prefer on each day in a week.
3. Set A Deadline
When you have decided your goals and have designed a plan for it, then setting a deadline is very essential to measure your progress. Many people fail in achieving their goals because they don’t set a deadline and thereby, they don’t know the proper time for measuring results, which causes discontinuation. So when you write your goals, mention a deadline for each goal and paste the paper at a place where you can see it everyday. You will know the perfect time to see what results have been attained by exercising as per the plan. A constant reminder in the form of deadline motivates you to pull up your socks and give your best for your own betterment.
4. Exercise In The Morning
Exercise is an activity which releases all the strained muscles, refreshes your senses and gives you flexibility. For this, you need to have a free mind while exercising and a high level of concentration. You cannot make a habit of exercising regularly if you hit the gym after coming from work with stress and exhaustion. Your body will actually not be ready for undergoing a physical training. If you start exercising after work, then surely you will discontinue it later. So it is better to exercise in the morning instead of evening because your body and mind both will be in a relaxed state. You must wake up early, have some juices and head for exercising. In this way, you will cultivate the habit of waking up early and then you have the whole day to continue with your routine work.
5. Don’t Make Excuses
You are more likely to build a habit if you stop making silly excuses. There is unique mind and body connection. If you are feeling lazy and you have other excuses ready like you are very tired or feeling ill, then your body will not allow you to workout, while your mind will tell you to go and exercise. Often the winner is your body and your unnecessary excuses causes a stoppage in the whole routine making you feel guilty later.
So stop making excuses if you really want to attain your goals. Continue to exercise even if you are feeling slightly ill but keep the training intensity low for that day. Skipping exercise for one day is a big de-motivator and you will then become habitual of skipping exercises before you actually become habitual of doing exercises!
6. Exercise With A Person Habitual Of Exercising
It is great to have a company while exercising. More than exercising alone, it is known that if you partner with someone, then your motivation level gets a boost. But you need to have the right choice of partner. If your partner quits or frequently bunks training, then you too are susceptible to follow him.
But if your partner is great at maintaining regularity, then it becomes a challenge for you. So find a person who has the habit of exercising and no matter what, he is present everyday. Look for a person who has the seriousness that you want to have, who has the zest to achieve his goal in the way to want to and start exercising with him with immediate effect. He is the one who will indirectly challenge you to enhance your training level and will fill you up with lots of confidence.
7. Have Confidence In Yourself
Confidence is believing in yourself when no one does. Nothing can distract you in attaining your goals if you have confidence in yourself. No matter if people laugh at you, criticise you or try to de-motivate you, you need to have confidence in you, your goals and your plans. Confidence cannot guarantee success but it can guarantee a source of power to face challenges. You cannot say that you are habitual of exercising if you workout for a week or so. Be consistent for 30 days by starting your exercises on the same time, for the same or greater duration and without bunking and then you can say that you have built the habit of exercising.
