DIY Wooden Hammock Stand
Having your own hammock in the backyard is great, especially for relaxation. But not all people have trees or posts in the backyard where they can hang their hammock. Instead of waiting for years to grow two trees, you can solve this issue by building a DIY hammock stand. For whatever reason, there are also steel powder coated hammocks with stand if you opt for the easier solution. What are we waiting for? Let’s jump right into it.
Materials and Tools
- 3/8’’ spring link (2)
- Hitch rings with plate (2)
- 2inch screws (24)
- 4inch metal brackets (4)
- 3 ½ inch screws (6)
- Wood glue
- Washers (24)
- 6inch hex bolts with nuts (12)
- Power Drill
- Wood Clamps
- Sandpaper
- Handsaw or Power saw
- Set square
- 2 x 4 lumber
Step 1
First, you have to cut every lumber to the dimensions required for the project. You’ll need 2 pieces of 2 x 4 lumbers. Each of them should be 8 foot long.
Lay the lumber so that the 3 1/2” sides will flat on the floor. Next, at each end of the boards, utilize a set square to help you make mirroring 30-degree angle cuts. Sand down the lumber.
Step 2
Then, cut 2 pieces of your 2 x 4 lumbers in half. This will result in 4 lateral posts. Every post should have 1 angled and 1 flat end.
Step 3
Next, to connect the lateral posts and base for additional support, you need to make slant timbers. Take another 2 x 4 lumber and find its center. Next, through the center, draw a 60-degree line, and then cut it. You will have 2 pieces of lumber with a similar length, each one with 60-degree angle end.
Also, in each piece, cut the straight end at a 60-degree angle.
Step 4
Take another 2 x 4 lumber and cut it 4 times, 15-inch each. Leave 2 pieces with 90-degree cuts on either end. You would utilize those to combine the top part of the lateral posts. The other 2 pieces must have a 30-degree angle end and a flat end. These pieces will strengthen where the base meets the lateral posts.
Step 5
At this step, you will now assemble the structure using bolts. Start at one end. As you drill holes through both lumbers, use clamps to hold the pieces of your hammock stand. To pass through easily the bolts, you will need to drill as straight as you can. Drill 2 holes through the top of lateral posts and 15-inch pieces. You need to drill 2 holes through each of the 15-inch pieces and 1 hole through each end of the slant timbers.
Step 6
Next, lay the remaining cuts on the ground. As of now, you should have 1 wood for the base and 2 unused lateral posts.
Precisely mark the holes onto your remaining materials. And keep in mind to drill as straight as you can.
Step 7
In the 1st half of the structure that you built, thread a 6-inch hex bolt washer through every hole. Apply a bit of wood glue between every lumber piece.
End this step by laying 2 lateral post and second base on top. Cover each bolt using a nut and a washer.
Step 8
Before you vertically flip the structure, wait until the glue completely dries. To make your hammock stand stable, add two feet. You will cut your remaining 2 x 4 lumber to create them.
Cut a notch into the wide side of the 2 x 4 at the center of one of the 4’ pieces. The notch should measure 4 ½ inch wide and 1 inch deep. Use a hammer and wood chisel.
Step 9
Using wood glue, you need to line the notch on the first foot. Next, lay the 2 x 4 down, making the wide side flat to the ground. Slide it up to snugly fit the notch around the bottom of your hammock stand. Drill holes and affix metal brackets.
Step 10
Lastly, fasten a hitch ring with 4 2-inch screws into the top of every end to hang your hammock. Next, utilize a 3/8 inch spring link at either end. This will hook your hammock to the hitch ring. You can also apply wood stain to your hammock to make it more durable.
