Discover the Works of Saint Augustine

As the Bishop of Hippo in Numidia, Roman North Africa, Saint Augustine (354-430AD) was known for being a theologian and a philosopher and during his life he completed a large number of works covering diverse fields including, theology, philosophy and sociology. In fact, he was one of the most prolific Latin authors, with 132 titles to his name. The works of Saint Augustine influenced the development of Western Philosophy and Western Christianity and are still considered relevant in today’s modern world, particularly as he helped to formulate the doctrine of original sin. 

We take a look at some of his most popular writings, including The Confessions, The City of God and On Christian Doctrine.  

The Confessions

We start with “The Confessions” possibly his best-known work and considered by many to be his autobiography. Full of rich descriptions and text, The Confessions comprises 13 books, 9 of which are autobiographical and was written when Augustine was in his forties. It’s believed that this writing was instrumental in helping him to work out and understand the meaning of his life. Throughout the book, Augustine explores the conflict between his role of bishop and his past life and gives us insight into how he believes that divine wisdom should be pursued.

The City of God

The City of God is St. Augustine’s answer to those who doubted the power of God following the sack of Rome by the Visigoths in 410. Through this book, he aimed to show anyone who was questioning the importance of Christianity in their lives that God’s love was unconditional. In line with his other works, the common themes of human life and the acceptance of disaster, disappointment and death together with having hope for the future and finding meaning in life run through this epic work. 

On Christian Doctrine

During his first few years as Bishop of Hippo, Augustine started to write On Christian Doctrine although it would take him another thirty years to finish it. The book is Augustine’s interpretation of the Scripture combined with his advice to anyone who wanted to become a preacher. It proved to be an influential work and became the principal focus of religious teachings during the Middle Ages. It still is considered a significant work today especially for students of philosophy. 

The Trinity

Perhaps his most controversial work, The Trinity is considered a masterpiece. It discusses Augustine’s thoughts and feelings about the concept of the Trinity, including sections on how he sees a resemblance between mankind and God. He also discusses how the Trinity can provide motivation for meditation and optimism.

Reconsiderations

Written during his final years, Saint Augustine offered a retrospective look at his life and career. He especially talks about the value of hindsight which, as we all know, is something we all dwell on as we get older. 

A Lifelong Legacy

Throughout his life, Augustine was known for his influential writing and for the positions that he held within the church. His books provided religious inspiration for many people and are still considered important today. 

In 1298, Augustine was canonized by Pope Boniface VII and is now known as the patron saint of brewers, printers and theologians.
