History
According to Ayurveda, curd is known to be a primary cause of Kapha and explains curd has sour mixed sweet property which is the only reason that increases Kapha Dosha (mucus) in the body. Kapha is the reason behind the mucus generation in your body which is predominant at the night time. Ayurveda asserts that curd should be avoided at night mostly. But according to modern science, avoiding curd at night is not applied to everyone and however, people who are prone to severe cold and cough should avoid eating curd at night. Hence, people who do not suffer from such cold, cough and sinus issues can easily consume curd or buttermilk at night.
Do’s and Don’ts
Sour curd is not safe to be consumed by making it hot especially at night as it could create more complications in cold and cough tendencies. It should also not be consumed in rainy nights as weak immunity bodies can get cold and cough with body tenderness and inflammation. However, sour curds mixed with soup of green gram, honey, ghee, sugar and amla is quite helpful in relieving Dysurea (difficulty in urination) and indigestion. But consuming curd at night should be avoided for safety as night is basically the mucus, Kapha predominant period. If you are very much habituated to take curd at night, better mix a small pinch of pepper powder to your curd and consume. You may also try adding fenugreek (methi) powder if you can hold a slight bitter tinge. However, this superb remedy will relieve all kinds of stomach pain generated due to indigestion. Mixing sugar with curd to drink at night is a strict no, instead buttermilk is a best substitute to curd at night. Buttermilk rather relieves mucus issues by clearing the channel and secretion of mucus.
