One in every eight people in Ireland have admitted to causing some kind of damage to their own home while attempting a DIY repair.
The latest survey in Ireland shows that just less than 13 percent of all home owners have ended up doing some kind of damage to their household while attempting to fix things up themselves.
Now, before starting any kind of fixing or DIY in your own home, you are encouraged to check whether any damages can be covered in your home insurance policy.
This study shows that men are more likely to have caused damage to their own home than women. Just under 16 percent of men have caused some damage to their own home. In comparison, just over 9 percent of women have admitted to causing some form of minor damage to their own homes.
While in the context of the current COVID-19 outbreak, the resulting forced lockdown may encourage some people to carry out some minor tasks that they had been keen to do for a while.
But as the AA’s Director of Consumer Affairs warns that before you begin any repair work, you should check your home insurance policy, just to be sure of what may be covered under your policy, and what is not. He added, that many home owners believe they will be covered, should they induce any damage costs or expenses, but often, that may not be the case.
In the survey, 8 percent of home owners admitted that the damage they had caused did not require any costs to be fixed. Alternatively, 4 percent admitted that the damage that they caused to their homes, racked up costs further.

Some Jobs Need An Expert
Truthfully, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to solve any gas, plumbing or other electrical problems when doing DIY around the house. Almost always, These jobs require a specialist expert who is fully trained and qualified. Of course, this applies to any sort of roof or structural work. Its always better not to learn the hard way.

Every single home renovation repair should begin with a to-do list. Let’s be realistic through, if you’re so DIY that you’re going to DIY your own to-do list, you should really just forget about it. What’s best for your own safety (and your wallet), is to simply hire a professional, and avoid missing out on some crucial steps that you ignored the first time around.
You can’t calculate the whole cost
Unless you are a home renovation expert, you will struggle to calculate the entire costs for project like this, some jobs naturally cost more than you might expect. However, it’s worth re-iterating that you should always check what is covered in your home insurance policy. Home insurance cover begins at just €20 a month, and may be worth looking in to.
