Great Apps You Can Use Anywhere In the World For Free International Calls
This post was last updated on April 12th, 2019
Thanks to the Internet, it’s never been easier to stay in touch with friends and family all over the world. In just a bit more than a decade, we moved from primitive online messengers you could use only on a desktop to polished apps that allow you to chat for free on the go (and also send cute emojis). The technology has been evolving ever since and although there weren’t additional big breakthroughs, new features keep on coming like creating an alternative phone number and chat apps that don’t rely on the Internet.
So I tested a couple of them out and in the article, I’ll provide my review. Some you probably know and some you might be surprised you never heard of considering how popular they are. While searching for new apps to test out, I stumbled upon an article that lists and gives in-depth info about every chat app which was quite helpful for my work. It saved me time picking the right apps from 9apps and it might help you do the same, so I’ll share the link.
Now, let me list 3 apps I think are the best and I myself am using.
1. Viber Messenger – The Father of All Chat Apps
This is the obvious one and it was the first app I used and I’m still using it today. If you have a phone, you probably at one point downloaded Viber so you pretty much have a clear idea. But I had to include it either way since it does its job very well. Viber moved from a sloppy, unstable app to a reliable tool for communication. I rarely get disconnections, audio is clear and it’s just an all-around well-built app. One of the newer features I also like is the ability to send quick videos. All you have to do is hold the camera button and you can instantly create and send 30-second long video messages. Before, you could only do it with audio, but now, you can quickly create videos as well. Finally, although I rarely use this feature, Viber enables you to chat with up to around 200 people in the same group. As said, I don’t need that, but if you have some large business meetings or similar, it’s definitely useful.
Naturally, it’s only fair to say that just because Viber is great, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t have some flaws. But I’ll also be honest and say that I’m not entirely sure is it because of the app or because of my device. For instance, sometimes when getting a call, I keep on swiping the reply button but I just can’t get it to work. It happened only a couple of times, but it did. It probably has to do with the app optimization and since I’m nitpicking, I can’t really complain much.
2. PHONE for Google Voice & GTalk
First of all, this app isn’t made directly by Google, but a third party. What I like about this one is the simple design that hides a couple of small gem features. The obvious feature is that you can use your Google voice account for calls and texts. Plus, there isn’t a limitation on how many you can do. But, for me personally, the feature I like the most is the ability to prepare and read texts even when offline. Tons of times I found myself without WiFi and a lot of time to prepare the message but I couldn’t. With this one, you just write it down, the app automatically saves it and then you can send it as soon as you get a connection.
The audio is good and the calls go through almost without any delays, but, when it comes to quality, I got to hand the flag to Viber. It’s not that audio is bad with this one, it’s perfectly understandable. But yet, there’s that small element where Viber still has better sound quality. Also, to make free calls outside North America, you still have to pay or get credits by watching ads. I understand this it the main way the app monetizes, but it’s weird if you want to make an international call and you have to check out a couple of videos first. Nevertheless, I do recommend this app especially if you’re looking a way to synchronize with your Google account.
3. TalkU – Free Calls Anywhere
Finally, here’s one I was quite surprised by how popular it seems to be. It just goes to show how there are so many things I still don’t know. It works on a similar system as the second one, but what I like about this one is that it shows you exactly how much credit you need for a specific domestic or international call. This way you can prepare yourself and not bang your head when you want to make a urgent call. Also, you can easily turn your tablet into a phone if you need, which is also useful. Audio is great and I never had unpleasant situations and overall, the app definitely meets the expectations as you can make free calls to any number.
As I mentioned, you need to watch videos to earn credits which might or might not bother you. But one thing that did bother me a bit is I wasn’t able to reach out to the person I was calling, yet I noticed my credits went down. It’s happened only once, but still, it did. To be fair, I contacted the customer service and they replied promptly. So, I should mention that it seems they have a decent customer support.
Final Words
So these are my top 3 communication apps I tested out. They all have their unique perk whether if it’s stability, free calls, connecting to other services and so on. So it all comes down to what you specifically need. I think I managed to cover most of it with these 3, but if you have any other app you think should be mentioned, do let me know. I’d be more than glad to review. Cheers.
