Moving into a new place is an exciting venture — until the reality of moving kicks in. For anyone who has previously gone through the hassle of picking up their entire life and placing it elsewhere knows what an overwhelming and stressful experience it is.

However, if you’re smart about the process when it comes to packing your belongings, the whole operation can run much more smoothly. To give yourself a hassle-free moving experience, be sure to use these 8 useful tips.

1. Get Yourself Ready

The first thing you need to do is clear your schedule. Take a break from work, responsibilities, and other duties to minimize stress. A week in advance is enough. Plan and mark which day you will pack up what items. Collect all the supplies you are going to need to organize. Moving boxes aren’t enough. Make sure you get a strong adhesive tape, bubble wrap roll, permanent markers, labels, containers in a variety of sizes, and scissors here. Now that you are ready to roll, let’s move on to the next step.

2. Get Rid of the Unnecessary Stuff

It’s no secret that the less you have, the easier it is to make your move. Take an inventory of what you need and what you don’t. If you are holding on to a lot of items that hold sentimental value, it may be time to let go. Arrange everything accordingly and toss away things that are useless or broken. Give away the rest to charity or a thrift store. Sell your more substantial items like an old washing machine or fridge that have no place in your new home. Decluttering can cut your packing efforts by half.

3. Choose an Organizing System

Make a list and organize all your belongings into their respective categories: books, appliances, utensils, clothing, etc. Label your boxes with what each box contains and the room or area of the home they belong in. Keep the boxes in an already emptied out space, such as your basement or some other open but sheltered area.

4. Smart Packing

Make a note of what is least used in your everyday life and what are the essentials. Start packing in advance and do not leave it for the last minute. Experts from South Park Removals give insight into the most basic packaging mistakes homeowners do while placing things in boxes. They strongly advise to never overfill a box to the fullest as it may fall apart. Filling a box half-empty is equally a bad idea for it can get squashed or damaged when under more bulky items. Always distribute the contents of the box evenly and in a manner that maintains the box’s shape.

5. Make Use of Suitcases

We all have suitcases, why not make proper use of them? For each family member, pack a bag precisely as one might do for a vacation. Pack up toiletries, a change of clothes and essentials, just in case you need anything.

6. Take Care of Yourself, Children and Pets in Advance

As if boxing away your whole life isn’t stressful enough, having hungry, crying, and cranky children or pets following you everywhere makes it even harder. Take care of them in advance by hiring a baby or pet on moving day. Also, make sure you and your family have already eaten beforehand because soon you won’t have a working kitchen to use. Or better yet, order in to minimize work.

7. Plan Furniture Placement

When the movers are inside your new abode waiting patiently for to you decide where do you want to set your couch, you suddenly realize the stress isn’t over. Plan and chart out the placement of heavy furniture items like couches, beds, or bookcases. You do not want heavy things scattered in the wrong places as it makes it more challenging to move in the remainder of your belongings.

8. Paperwork and Important Documents

Keep all your paperwork and realtor documents in a separate file, ready to produce when needed. Keep your vital records such as identity verifications, banking essentials such as checkbooks and receipts in another folder for easy access.

Moving away doesn’t sound like much of a hassle now, does it? It is always a good idea to plan, predict, and organize your activities in advance so you can be stress-free and enjoy the experience instead of dreading it.
