This post was last updated on August 25th, 2021

Yes, essential oils are extremely beneficial and important to have a healthy lifestyle. However, mistakes can still be made. In order to help you as much as we can, we have compiled a list of 7 mistakes most people make at some point while using essentials oils. Now you know how to avoid them and use the essential oils properly.

1. Using essential oils on the sun which are photosensitive

Some essential oils will change their chemical composition while exposed to the sunlight. These are photosensitive oils and they have to be used in a dark area, like when going to sleep at night. When the composition is changed, you won’t get the result you have been expecting. This refers to lemon, grapefruit, lime, and similar essential oils. Luckily, almost all essential oil brands will mention which products are photosensitive.

2. Diffusing essential oils for too long

Almost all essential oils have to be diffused between 30 and 60 minutes in a well-ventilated area. Some people believe that if they diffuse them for a longer period of time, they will get more benefits. This isn’t the case and you can actually get side effects. Always diffuse them in the aforementioned time duration or you can use time diffusers which will apply the essential oils when specified.

3. Storing the oils on the sunlight

All essential oils come in dark bottles and essential oil rollers so sunlight won’t damage their chemical composition. Make sure to store them accordingly and keep them away from hot and sunny areas.

4. Using additives

Some essential oils may include additives. These are chemicals that don’t have any benefit for you. In some, rare cases they will have side effects. Always avoid essential oils of this kind and look for 100% pure products.

5. Diluting them incorrectly

For all essential oils, you need 12 drops and one ounce of other essential oil, known as carrier oil. If you add too much essential oil, but too little of carrier oil, you will get higher than needed concentration. In the worst-case scenario you will spend all the essential oil faster than needed.

6. Rinsing essential oils with water

Actually, you will need a carrier oil to rinse it from the skin. This is mandatory and extremely important. Always use essential oils with a lot of care and make sure to seal them properly after each use.

7. All can use essential oils

This is partially true, but there are some things to consider. For instance, pregnant women should avoid all essential oils in the first 3 months of pregnancy. Babies and small children need to avoid them as well or use them in much smaller concentrations. Pets may be affected by your essential oils, keep that in mind as well.

Conclusion

In the lack of a better word, essential oils are safe to use and beneficial, but there are still many mistakes people make. Now you know the most common ones and you can avoid them.
