Expert Tips on How to Redesign a Small Bedroom

With a little bit of organizing and planned styling, you can make your small bedroom look and feel bigger.

It’ll quickly become an inspiring and luxurious space. Okay … maybe not necessarily luxurious, but impressive and functional. Your bedroom will no longer feel cluttered or claustrophobic.

After transforming your bedroom, it will be a place you can’t wait to hang out at the end of a long day.

So if you’re ready to redesign your small bedroom and bring new life into it, we have some ideas for you.

Steal these expert tips, and you’ll no doubt love your new and improved space.

1. Streamlined Layout

When you’re working with limited space, it’s important to keep your design simple. Don’t try to be overly clever with arranging your furniture.

Your bed should be centered against the biggest wall in the room. It doesn’t make sense to push to one side of the space.

If possible, put your dresser against the center of the wall, too. You should have enough space to make your bed without bumping into anything behind you.

2. Storage Underneath the Bed

If you can add a platform to your bed with drawers underneath, that’s an excellent way to use your space.

If you don’t like that approach, don’t worry — there are other options. For example, you can put some wicker storage baskets under your bed to store things.

Better yet, try an under-bed storage tub with wheels. Then, you can pull it out from underneath your bed whenever you need access to something.

If you have a lot of clothing, store your seasonal stuff under the bed. Then whenever the seasons change, you can swap out your closet.

To capitalize on the space under your bed, use vacuum-sealed bags. These bags compress the clothing inside so you can fit more stuff into them.

Who knew taking advantage of the space in your bedroom could be this easy?

3.  Hanging Nightstand

You’re probably noticing a common theme here, which is to make use of those overlooked spaces. Instead of placing everything out in the middle of your room, you’ve gotta take advantage of all the nooks and crannies!

Here’s another suggestion:

Get a hanging nightstand. It’ll allow you to make use of the vertical space above your bed.

Don’t forget to check the weight limit or have a professional install it. You don’t want to worry about something falling on you!

4. Lots of Light

Adding plenty of light to your bedroom is essential.

Why is that?

Without adequate light, your bedroom can start to feel claustrophobic and dark.

But with a lot of light (especially natural light), your room will feel much bigger.

If you don’t have any windows in your room, that’s okay. Overhead lighting can do the trick.

Or, you could add a floor lamp and a bedside table lamp. If you don’t even have enough room for those, then you should mount a sconce or pendant light to the wall.

5. Pay Attention to Scale

Choose each item that comes into your room with thoughtful consideration. Each decoration and piece of furniture should work with the room’s size.

For example, don’t buy a big dresser if you don’t have space. It might be nice to have a lot of drawers for all of your extra clothes, but you may not have the room for it.

One thing you might go big on is the artwork. A large art piece can breathe some life into the space, especially if it’s in a bold color. So if you have some extra wall space, consider hanging a large (but not too large) painting or print.

6. Stylize the Room

There are many ways to add touches of personality without it overpowering the room. With the right decorative elements, you can make your bedroom appear larger than it really is.

Here are a few elements to think about placing in your room:

Are you wondering how a rug can make a room appear larger? Well, light colors add the illusion of space. With a rug, you can incorporate a large swatch of space-enhancing color into your room.

In regards to mirrors, they also create the illusion of space. Try angling a few toward a focal point to make the room feel wider than it is. Plus, the interior will also look brighter, which is always a plus.

7. Add Foldable Furniture

Foldable furniture allows you to have items you might otherwise not have space for.

For example, let’s say you wanted a pretty accent chair. If you live in a 10’x10’ bedroom, you don’t have the space for one.

But a folding chair could fit perfectly!

If you are in college or work from home and you’d like to have a desk in your room, you can mount a convertible fold-down desk to the wall.

These desks can be pulled down when you need to work and folded back up when you’re all done. They’re a useful and affordable way to make the most of the space in your bedroom.

It turns out that size doesn’t matter when you’re redesigning a bedroom! Even though you have a small interior, you can still have a great room.

There’s no need for a bedroom to be the size of an amphitheater. Even with a modest amount of space, it can still be stylish and functional.

Your strategic planning is bound to pay off, and you’ll be proud of yourself when you see the outcome.
