As parents, the balancing act of work and parental duty is one we are constantly struggling with. It’s a wobbly line to straddle too – work too much and you’re neglecting your duties, work too seldom and you’ll earn less money with which to spoil your little rascals. The key is in finding a job that works for your family, not against it.
These are the jobs that are not strictly 9-5 and can be planned around childcare, school runs and school holidays. So what do these flexible jobs look like? You’re about to find out.
1. Babysitting
Perhaps the most obvious solution would be to take the skills you’ve learned looking after your own children and apply them directly in starting up a childcare service. You’re already looking after kids all day anyway, so why not add a few more to the pile and make some money for your troubles?
2. Copywriting/Blogging
Anyone with a decent grasp of the English language and a University degree can earn a living working from home as a professional copywriter. The job entails quite literally writing copy for a diverse range of clients and it’s an incredibly easy and lucrative business to set up. There are numerous avenues and portals to get you started such as People Per Hour and Copify, but once you’ve built up your own client base you can start charging premium rates and working as and when you want and need to work!
3. Taxi driving
The rise in popularity of ride-sharing apps such as Uber has really opened up the playing field when it comes to private taxi work. You don’t need to simply drive around it your battered old estate either as websites such as Cab Direct sell standard and purpose-built taxis that will make you stand out amidst the competition.
4. Crafts
If you have a few creative muscles that you want to flex and think your artistic flair might be able to stretch to items that people actually want to buy then why not set up an Etsy page? You can use it to sell everything from handmade clothes and art to musical instruments, guitar effects pedals, personalised gifts and more. If you can build it, you can probably make money from it and soon you might even have enough of an online following to evolve your little online store into a fully-fledged online business!
The best thing about all four jobs above is that you don’t need to choose just one. Be a renaissance man or woman and try your hand at as many jobs as possible until you find the combination of jobs that works for you and gives you and your family the life you deserve.
